The vast, dynamics and competitive organization today, are increasingly investing knowledge to go deeper into their most valuable assets, their people. Realizing the full potential of the assets hinge on creating a workplace culture at least rely on three factors and actively combats the insidious influence of politics in HR. Professionalism, merit based system and ethical HR practise are crucial in building also maintaining a productive and fair workplace environment. Those who prioritize these elements can enhance its efficiencies, retain top talent and creating environment the employees feel valued and motivated. However, without proper measures, politics in HR can undermine the principles, leading to favouritism, bias, and work dissatisfaction.
Professionalism encompasses behaviours, attitudes and standards that contribute to a respectful and efficient work environment. It include a constellation qualities such as: competence and expertise, integrity and ethical conduct, accountability and responsibility, respect and collaboration, reliability and effective communication. When professionalism permeates organization, it fosters a culture of respect, trust, collaboration and high performance that drive to reducing conflict, increasing productivity and promote organizational success.
On the other hand, a merit based system is the cornerstone of a fair and equitable workplace. It ensures that employees are evaluated, promoted, and rewarded based on performance, skills, and contribution rather than personal relationships or favouritism. Those key components include: clear and objective performance standards, regular and transparent performance reviews, equal pays and rewards system, opportunities for career advancement, transparent hiring and promotion, and training and development. A well implemented merit system foster a sense of fairness and motivates employees to strive for excellence, attracting and retaining top talent and enhancing organizational performance at the end of the road.
HR politics characterized by favouritism, backstabbing, and power plays, can undermine merit system, creating toxic work environment that lead to conflict, low morale, and reducing productivity. This because those who are productive will live in fear of stand out, yet those who are lazy could increasingly sink into the comfort of not to contribute. To mitigate the impact of HR politics, the organization should implement some of the strategies such: establish clear HR policies and procedures, promote transparency and open communication, maintain culture of accountability, limit subjective decision making by training leaders in fair and unbiased decision, promote ethical leadership, implement conflict resolution mechanism, encourage whistleblowing and protect whistleblowers, and use data and analytics as an HR information to make a decision that minimizing the potential for subjective bias. By actively addressing HR politics, organization can create a level play field where employees are valued for their contribution and thrive.
Professionalism, merit system, and proactive prevention of HR politics are not stand alone system. They are interconnected and mutually beneficial. When they integrated as organizational culture, it can create a virtuous cycle: professionalism enhance the effectiveness of merit, a fair merit reinforce professionalism, and combating HR politics defend both professionalism and merit system.
